Arch1101_2014 Before First Class

This painting was completed for one of my B Fine Arts assessments last year. It portrays a person falling from the top of a high building while reaching for a broken hourglass. My intentions with these features is to convey an agony of regret that follows the character's decision to suicide. The colours used in the artwork assists in the evoke this intense emotion. The hourglass is representative of the human life span and foreshadows the fate of the character.

The Colosseum is one of the greatest architectural achievements in history. It was built during ancient times around 70-72AD and is now positioned at the center of Rome, Italy. Initially it was used for recreational purposes; using the Colosseum as a hunting ground for imported animals of various species or an arena where gladiators would fight each other to supposedly entertain 87,000 spectators. In some cases criminals would also be executed at the site by being placed in the arena with various dangerous, carnivorous animals. The Colosseum has an elliptical plan 189 meters long and 156 meters wide. Its aesthetic design was derived from the characteristics of Roman Theaters at the time. It consists of 4 stories, 3 consecutive stories from the base consist of 80 arches.

This is a photograph that I took by the shore at Rhodes. The scene consists of the silhouette of two friends squatting by the shoreline. In front of them is a vast sea that stretches to the horizon across the middle of the photograph. On the other side are a silhouette of buildings, apartments and construction sites. Behind these buildings is the wide cloudless sky with orange colours of the sunset softly blending into a violet night sky.
